Using either pencil or pen, learn what to look for when drawing trees, such as trunk and branch form, leaf mass, silhouette shape and contours, as well as light and dark to create value and form. Only from sketching outdoors can one acquire a real knowledge of trees, and students are encouraged to bring a Peterson Field Guide of Eastern Trees to help identify some of the names and characteristics of our local trees.
On the first day we will look at and sketch the details of trees, including branch forms, leaf position and types as well as bark texture and outline forms. Students will be encouraged to make studies of many different types of trees and identify them.
On the second day, we will attempt to complete one tree portrait.
The class will be traveling to the garden of Buddy and Monika Nixon at 44 Kent Hollow Road in Kent, CT. Their garden was featured in the Garden Conservancy Open Days Program as one of Connecticut's finest private gardens.
