The Flood, 1955The flood of August 19, 1955 devastated the Washington Art Association, as well as Washington Depot, thanks to the convergence Hurricanes Connie and Diane. To this day, it remains the worst natural disaster in Washington Depot history as well as that of the state of Connecticut.
These pictures show just how destructive this storm was. The Washington Art Association, as well as Washington Depot, was ruined.
At the time, a portrait show was featured at the Association. It was a total loss. While some works were spared the devastation, most were not. The Washington Art Association ran ads in area newspapers offering rewards for returned paintings and property. Six items were recovered: two paintings, one album, one table, one chair, and one rug. For the return of these items, the Association paid five dollars each. All finders gave their rewards to the Community Fund, with the exception of young Elsa Lucchinia who turned hers over to the Washington Art Association. Thank you, Elsa!
