Bright and Beautiful

with with Roberta Shea

Open to artists of all kinds, participants will create their own journals inspired by “An Island Garden” and the life and poetry of Appledore Island’s Celia Thaxter and the paintings of American Impressionist Childe Hassam. We will draw, paint, letter, and collage from lyrical descriptions of the hollyhocks and poppies and scarlet flax of Celia’s tiny garden and from flowers filled in many vases throughout the studio. No experience is necessary, only an interest in creating a lasting memory of your summer garden and vacation in a relaxed and stimulating environment.  Paper journals, pencils, pens and watercolors will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring their own brushes, sketchbooks, photos, drawings, and other materials of choice and stimuli from which to work.

It blossomed by the summer sea,

A tiny space of tangled bloom

Wherein so many flowers found room

A miracle it seemed to be!
