The Deep Dive: Painting a Series - A Virtual Workshop

with Souby Boski

"Art is never finished only abandoned" ~ Leonardi Da Vinci

Let’s really explore a subject and think deeply about it. Go in-depth on a subject. Develop your ideas fully and see just how far you can push those ideas. The closer you look the more fascinating your explorations will become.

Choose a theme that inspires and interests you. Try to find something that has a personal emotional connection. Have several canvases and a selection of reference photos of the same subject. Suggested materials list provide upon registration.

Why paint a series?

  • It gives you a plan, a direction, a goal and the confidence to explore different angles, perspectives, contexts, etc.
  • It helps you understand your subject. By studying your subject and painting it more than once you are better able to interpret it on a higher level. You move beyond copying what you see as you become more familiar with the subject.
  • It pushes you out of your comfort zone! When you paint a subject many times you have to work hard at making each new painting unique yet still retain the connection to the series. You have to try new ideas, techniques, colors, etc. You have already figured out the issues with the subject now you are free to play!
