Little Compton Exhibit 2010

By the Beautiful Sea

Rhode Island has a jewel of a seaside town. It s called Little Compton. For the last 3 years I have led a group of painters to Little Compton and we have painted the ocean, the bays, the fields, and the rivers of this beautiful town. We have all been inspired to create art that is a personal response to the reality before us.

As artists, we need to be inspired by the terrain we see. Sometimes a change of venue, exposing ourselves to something we don t ordinarily live with every day, creates a shift in our perception that produces something new for us a new way of seeing reality. It is always exciting to see the paintings that this produces -- therefore, this show.

These paintings do not have a style in common. They are personal in nature. Each artist is communicating their response to what they see. They all experience this picturesque place in ways that are unique to them. And isn't that what makes looking at paintings so exciting?
