Visit the Elizabeth MacDonald Retrospective at the Washington Art Association
The Washington Art Association is thrilled to present a retrospective exhibition of Elizabeth MacDonald’s work, which will be on display until May 26, 2024. This comprehensive showcase includes MacDonald’s sculptural and ceramic pieces, as well as paintings and works on paper that span her distinguished career.
Elizabeth MacDonald, an accomplished artist skilled in a variety of mediums, has crafted a unique approach in her clay work that brings together intimacy and grandeur through the use of small surface elements and fragmentation. After firing, these elements reveal complex layers of color, texture, and powdered ceramic stain. MacDonald describes her process, saying, “As I choose powders of one imagined hue to mingle with another, I know that every bit of pigment, though hidden in the powdered mixture, will affect the whole. Results of this initial process become the chaos of fragments from which I work. Each element becomes a discovery.”
In addition to her ceramic work, the exhibition also highlights MacDonald’s talent in creating paintings and works on paper, where she continues to explore her fascination with natural and archaeological themes. Her works often resemble a cross-section of the earth, with layered, earth-toned striations that suggest a mountainous landscape or a closer examination of nature’s intricate details. MacDonald’s objective is to communicate contrasting textures, shapes, and surfaces, reflecting an intuitive understanding of time and space.
Having exhibited her work extensively, MacDonald’s creations have been included in many major private and public collections, and she has received numerous awards, including the 1999 Governor’s Arts Award in visual arts. She currently resides in Bridgewater, CT.
Though the opening reception on April 20 has passed, the exhibition continues to welcome visitors. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm at The Washington Art Association, 4 Bryan Memorial Plaza, Washington Depot, CT 06794.
